An inspirational Dewsbury-based drop-in service is hoping Hospice Care Week will help change the perception of palliative care delivery in the region.
Opened in 2000, the Rosewood Centre offers a range of services tailored to the needs of patients and carers coping with the challenges of life-limiting conditions.
The free service is wholly geared to enhancing quality of life and helping people to adjust to the physical limitations caused by their illness, whilst addressing often complex social and psychological problems.
Rosewood is presently gearing up for its busiest time of the year – its November memorial service to remember former patients and Christmas, which sees staff working to ensure isolated patients are not without support and companionship over the holiday period.
The welcoming centre offers a whole range of services for patients including nursing support, aromatherapy, hairdressing, art and craft therapies, internet access, benefits advice, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, spiritual and chaplaincy support and an out-reach lymphoedema service supported by the Prince of Wales Hospice at Pontefract. We also offer patients psychosocial support in conjunction with Kirkwood Hospice.
The centre is operated by staff from The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust and a team of volunteers. It is part-funded by the Trust and Kirkwood Hospice.
Julie Pagan, Senior Sister at the Rosewood Centre, said: “People are continually amazed by the happy and uplifting atmosphere created in the Rosewood Centre. Staff and volunteers go above and beyond the call of duty for patients and their carers and nothing is too much trouble.
“Our ability to enhance the lives of people with life-limiting conditions is regularly rewarded with charitable donations which help us enhance the service for people who most need us. We’re hoping Hospice Care Week will once again give us much needed publicity and provide a way to change perceptions about Palliative Care.”
The Rosewood Centre is presently fundraising to enable the completion of a new conservatory area. It is situated in the grounds of Dewsbury & District Hospital, Halifax Road, Dewsbury WF13 4HS.
Hospice Care Week takes place from 6-12 October. More information about Hospice Care Week is available from www.helpthehospices.org.uk
