The service delivered by Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments across the Trust has now been amongst the best in the country for two-and-a-half years.
Figures released by NHS England show A&E units managed by the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust in Dewsbury, Pontefract and Wakefield have been seeing and treating 95% of patients within four hours for 10 consecutive quarters stretching right back to March 2012.
A raft of measures introduced in recent months including more senior doctors, the support of colleagues in Primary Care, and the introduction of seven day working in key areas has helped consistently improve the ranking of the service which treats close on 4,500 patients per week across the Trust.
Dr Sarah Robertshaw, lead emergency medicine consultant at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "This is fantastic news and the result of a genuine team effort right across the service. Changes to the way we’ve delivered the Emergency Care service has brought major improvements in recent months. Every person involved wants nothing but the best possible care for our patients.”
The performance of the Trust, which has the fifth busiest A&E unit in the country, has regularly exceeded the national standard of seeing, assessing and either discharging or admitting over 95% of patients within four hours over the last 10 quarters.

The Trust has made significant improvements to achieve these great results over recent months and continues to further improve the patient journey from admission to discharge to enable bed availability for next emergency admission.”
Dr Adam Sheppard, Chair of the Strategic Resilience Group for North Kirklees and Wakefield said: “This achievement reflects a huge amount of hard work by the clinicians and staff in A&E, and by the local GPs who have worked with them. More than that, though, it’s good news for patients who are getting a service amongst the best in the country.”
