Hospital service changes approved

These changes once delivered over a two week period from September 4th 2017, mark the end of a three year Acute Hospital Reconfiguration (AHR) programme, to develop Pinderfields Hospital as the main site for treating the most seriously ill patients and to secure Dewsbury and District Hospital and Pontefract Hospital as centres of excellence for elective care and rehabilitation.

Consolidating specialist and critical care onto one site, will mean the most seriously ill patients get faster access to senior clinicians with the right skills, which will mean they a more likely to make a good recovery, whilst patients with less serious or urgent care needs will still be able to receive all of their treatment locally.

During August and September the final phase of work will include:

• Opening of new medicine and elderly care step down wards at Dewsbury and District Hospital.

• Increased rehabilitation and ‘step down’ care at Dewsbury and District and Pontefract Hospitals for people who are recovering after a period in hospital.

• Transfer of inpatient care for acute medical patients from Dewsbury and District Hospital to Pinderfields Hospital.

The Emergency Department at Dewsbury and District Hospital continues as it does today, to offer 24 / 7 consultant led emergency care. Patients are reminded that they continue to take themselves to Dewsbury and District Hospital unless they need an ambulance: if they call an ambulance the paramedics will decide which is the best hospital for their needs.

Jules Preston, Chairman of Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust said: “We are close to delivering Acute Hospital Reconfiguration and the approval of our plans by local commissioners follows a very rigorous assurance process.

“By making these changes, we are creating services that are better able to meet local needs and future demand. It allows the Trust to ensure better outcomes for our patients, delivering the right care, by the right professional at the right time.
