June AHR update

We are moving forward with Acute Hospital Reconfiguration (AHR) at speed with the first few service moves complete.

The first move successfully completed was the transfer of a stroke rehabilitation ward, from Gate A1 at Pinderfields to Pontefract hospital. Now located in the Pontefract Stroke, Rehabilitation and Medical Unit on level C of the hospital.

This has been followed by the move of fractured neck of Femur patients, five days after their operation, to Pontefract and Dewsbury Hospitals for therapy and rehabilitation.

We have also confirmed the wards locations across the three hospital sites post September and a schedule to deliver these changes is now being developed.

Further changes soon to be made include:
•    The creation of new frailty units on both the Pinderfields and Dewsbury sites (a dedicated service, for mainly older people with complex care needs, focusing on rapid assessment; treatment and effective planned discharge)
•    Expanded space and opening hours for ambulatory care allowing patients to have treatment without the need for a hospital admission.
•    Dewsbury Hospital will see the development of a Clinical Decision Unit (where patients would be admitted for a short time for tests and initial treatment before being discharged or transferred to a ward) and the opening of medicine and elderly care step down wards.

AHR will improve patient flow and the programme brings associated services closer together, to deliver patients with a better service offer and improve patient care through quicker access to the appropriate health care professional.

Once complete AHR will centralise acute inpatient care at Pinderfields and establish Dewsbury and Pontefract hospitals as Centres of Excellence for elective (planned non-emergency) and rehabilitation.

Essential tests such as x-rays, scans and blood tests will continue to be available at all three hospitals.
