Local market trader helps Children’s Ward


The  Children’s Assessment Unit on gate 46 at Pinderfields Hospital were ready for action after receiving a Playstation 4 from Ossett & Pontefract market trader Richard Porter, of Porters Fruit and Veg Ltd.

The Children’s wards at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, makes sure that all its young patients are happy and entertained by supplying toys for all ages.

Richard Porter, who has six children of his own, is very appreciative of the work and the support the Children’s wards provide and said “I know how important these donations are to the children’s wards and I wanted to donate a toy that I know a lot of children would enjoy and hopefully cheer them up during their time in hospital.

 “I’m really grateful for all the support I’ve received from the staff, patients and visitors at Pinderfields since setting up my stalls on the site. I'm getting nothing but great comments and everyone seems really happy with the produce.”

Gillian Squires, Play Leader on the Children’s Inpatient wards at Pinderfields & Dewsbury Hospitals, at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said “On behalf of the Children’s Playtime team I would like to say a huge thank you to Richard for this kind donation. These types of contributions really do make a difference to us and the children on the wards. I know many of the children will be delighted with this new addition.”

Richard Porter of Porters Fruit and Veg Ltd, has recently ‘set up shop’ outside the main entrance at Pinderfields Hospital every Monday and Thursday, where he will be visiting for the next three months during a trial period. The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust currently has a partnership link with Wakefield Council, to encourage healthy lifestyles for staff, visitors and patients and are keen to support local business.

The market stall initiative at Pinderfields was set up with support from Wakefield Council.

Feedback so far from the public and the staff is very positive in terms of produce, the idea and about Richard himself.
