One of The Mid Yorkshire Hospital’s NHS Trust’s volunteers Nicolino Attardo (known by staff and the volunteers as “Nico”), has been successful in achieving his long standing ambition to gain employment with the Trust’s portering service at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.
Nico has been a highly valued and respected member of the Voluntary Services team at Pinderfields Hospital for over four years, and has always hoped to gain full time employment within the Trust since being a patient at Pinderfields Hospital ten years ago.
After not getting the grades he had hoped for at school he became a volunteer and tried various roles volunteering with the dementia team, guiding and now doing the newspaper trolley service around the wards to help him find out what area he really wanted to work in. After thoroughly enjoying four years as a volunteer at Pinderfields Hospital he set his hopes on becoming a Porter at the hospital to continue to support both patients and ward staff.
Trust volunteer Nico said “I’ve really enjoyed my volunteering role here at Pinderfields helping patients and supporting them while they are in hospital it has never felt like a chore. I’ve got to know so many members of staff and the other volunteers have been a great support - I really feel like part of a big family. I’m thrilled to be given the opportunity to be a full time Porter here at the Trust and I can’t wait to continue helping more patients during their stay in hospital.”
Vikki Padgett, Voluntary Services Manager, at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said “Myself and the Voluntary Services team are delighted that Nico has achieved his ambition of becoming a full time Porter here at the Trust. He has been a huge credit to the volunteers and has always gone above and beyond for our patients. Although we will very much miss him as a volunteer we are thrilled he will still be based here at Pinderfields.”
The Trust’s voluntary team are now keen to recruit volunteers to continue to support the newspaper trolley service at Pinderfields and to start the service at Pontefract Hospital.
