The Stepping Stones Appeal

The Stepping Stones Appeal was established in the 1980s by staff, patients and relatives to raise funds for a new Regional Spinal Injuries Centre. When the decision was made to build new hospitals at Pinderfields and Pontefract, it was agreed that the funds raised by Stepping Stones Appeal would be donated towards building a new rehabilitation unit.

£2 million was donated for the YRSIC and £400,000 used for specialist equipment to further enhance patient care and experience at the Centre. This includes a dedicated sports hall, a conditioning suite, a therapies area, IT room, a bathroom/shower room and a wheelchair store.

The Stepping Stones Appeal funded the purchase of the Lokomat – a revolutionary piece of equipment to enhance treatment for patients at the YRSIC.
