Celebrating National Admin Day - Tim

Tim smiling at the camera

In celebration of National Admin Day we have a special MY Role featuring Tim who works in the Recruitment Team.

Hello my name is…

Timothy Gordon

What is your job title/where are you based?

Recruitment Assistant based in Stanley Hall.

What does your role involve?

A manager puts an advert onto NHS Jobs and that advert then has to be approved by our department for it to be able to go out and then they will arrange and conduct the interview and choose their successful candidate.

When someone gets a yes from the manager at interview the person doesn’t go straight into working there is a process that they have to go through as ultimately Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust has a duty of care to make sure the people who work for Mid Yorkshire will be people who will care for members of the public when they need help the most. We do all we can to make sure no-one will abuse their position of trust with working in a hospital with the most vulnerable people in society in their hour of need.

For example, we:

  • Conduct DBSs (which is the police check that we do to make sure no-one has done anything wrong to potentially put someone at risk in Mid Yorkshire’s care)
  • We check that the person has the correct qualifications to work in the role that they are working in
  • Obtain references to check employment history and whether any warnings are in place to make sure they are safe to work with Mid Yorkshire
  • Do an occupational health clearance so that the person has enough support and things can be put into place, if need be, to make the employees experience of working with Mid Yorkshire a great place to work
  • We have to make sure the person is legally allowed to work in the UK.

All of these checks take time and it is down to how proactive the candidate is and how fast things come back like DBSs (which we use an external provider to use), but we do try to get the candidates in as quickly as possible making sure we satisfy all of the pre-employment checks correctly.

Once a candidate is complete, we will then inform the manager so that the manager can arrange a start date with the candidate, taking into consideration any notice period that they have to give as we advise candidates not to hand in their notice until all of the checks are complete.

Once we get informed of the start date from the manager, we will then issue out to the candidate their unconditional offer letter and contract.

What’s the best thing about your role?

The people who I work with.

Is there an aspect of your work that makes you most proud?

When we get a person completed and I know that the person who has completed their checks will be very shortly making a positive impact for the hospital because another vacancy is filled and that person is working for Mid Yorkshire.

Has your department/ward made any improvements to the service for the benefit of patients or staff?

The department along with other departments have set up an onboarding form for managers so that when someone is ready to start the manager only has to fill in one form and then it will go to a specific email address so that every department who needs to know when the start date is will know and be able to get everything ready for when the person starts working with Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust.

Has your service/department/ward had any compliments from either patients, visitors or staff?

I have been supporting recruitment for the new Surgical Hub, opening at Dewsbury in the summer. Nursing recruitment is almost complete and I have received ‘thank you’ messages from candidates for the help I have provided during the process.

One candidate has personally emailed to thank me for the professionalism and dedication that has made the transition smooth and efficient.

For fun!

Do you have a role model within the Trust and why?

I look to Georgina Woodford, head of Recruitment, as my role model as she always has time for you and when you are talking to her, she is always interested in what you have to say and the person as a whole. The way she listens and responds you can fully tell that she cares about you. I feel that with Georgina time is no barrier and yes, she does have meetings to go to as part of her role but she will always make sure she has time for her team and wants to find out how you are getting on.

She is a great example of how a leader should be she also wants the best for the Trust as a whole and she always seems to have multiple things that she is on with to do with work, but doesn’t seem to do it to make herself look good she does it because she has the best interests of Mid Yorks at the heart of everything that she does. This is the reason why Georgina is my role model within the Trust.

Given the chance, who would you like to be for a day?

Martin Luther King Jr. I have picked this person because I feel everyone should have equal rights and I don’t feel it is fair that society / the world is the way that it is, the fact that you are born into a situation and that the rich seem to get richer and the people who are less well off seem to be in a never-ending cycle of poverty and that can be said of our society and right around the world.

What do you like to do in your own time?

A big proportion of my time is taken up by going to Church which I love to do, when I am not at Church I do like to go for a good walk and cook whenever I have the opportunity. I also like spending time with friends and family.

What’s the best holiday you’ve ever been on?

The best holiday I have been on is going to Kyrgyzstan in Asia.

People would be surprised if they knew:

When I was younger, I used to go to Stagecoach where you act, dance and sing on a weekly basis and then we do an end of term show and one particular time I preformed at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds.
