“It’s so much nicer being at home”: Penny’s story of looking after her own IV antibiotics away from hospital

When Penny Naylor was offered the chance to receive her IV antibiotics at home rather than staying in hospital, she didn’t hesitate.
I was really pleased I could get home and get back to normal,” Penny said. “It was a bit daunting at first, but the nurses were brilliant. They took it slowly, showed me exactly what to do, and were always there if I had questions. That gave me confidence.
The IV at home service allows patients like Penny to be discharged earlier from hospital while continuing their treatment safely at home. This not only frees up hospital beds but helps patients feel more comfortable and independent managing their care.
Being able to manage her antibiotics at home made a real difference to Penny’s daily life.
It meant I could get on with my normal jobs, even go out. It was loads better.
There were a few adjustments – like having to set an early alarm to take her antibiotic out of the fridge – but Penny said it was a small price to pay.
It still beat being in hospital!
Now Penny encourages others to consider home IV therapy if its instructed.
I’d definitely recommend it. It’s easy to learn, you always have 24-hour support from the nurses, and it’s so much nicer being at home.
