Palliative Care

Palliative Care

Specialist palliative care (SPC) is provided by a multi-professional team who work in partnership with those providing generalist palliative care to ensure that patients’ and families’ complex needs are met.

Palliative Care

Palliative care is the active holistic care of patients with advanced, progressive illness. Management of pain and other symptoms and provision of psychological, social and spiritual support is paramount. The goal of palliative care is the achievement of the best possible quality of life for patients and their families. Many aspects of palliative care are also applicable earlier in the course of the illness in conjunction with other treatments.

Hospital teams, GP’s and District Nurse are able to provide general Palliative Care support. Should your needs become complex you may be referred for a specialist assessment and support. This may be discussed with the Doctor looking after your care.

The Mid Yorkshire Macmillan Specialist Palliative Care Team (SPCT) works in partnership with those providing generalist palliative care to ensure that patients’ and families’ complex needs are met. The team works closely with other health professionals in the hospital and community to ensure that all appropriate patients, including those with non malignant disease, can achieve the best possible quality of life.

Conditions we treat include life limiting illness which may include cancer, or non cancer diagnosis.

Statistics from our service

Patients referred to the service after March 2020 were given the option of an initial face to face assessment. Alternatively, a telephone consultation was offered.

  • 100% of patients felt the team members had explained the service clearly.
  • 87% of patients rated the service as excellent and 13% rated the service as good.

We have roles within the team both clinical and non clinical which enables us to meet the individual needs of patients and families who are referred to us.
