Why I chose the NHS after university

Background and career path
I graduated with a degree in Information Technology, which gave me a strong foundation in systems, databases, and tech-based problem-solving. I took some time to reflect on what I wanted from my career and didn't rush into anything.
I was drawn to the NHS because of its reputation as a place where you can develop professionally, with many different career paths available.
The training administrator role caught my eye as it involved working with areas I studied at university, while offering the chance to contribute to something meaningful.
What inspired me to pursue this line of work
Was this the career you imagined for yourself when you started out?
When I began, I pictured myself in a more traditional tech role, such as software development or IT support. However, as I explored different opportunities, I realised I’m equally drawn to roles that involve working with people, managing systems, and improving processes.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day involves managing bookings for training sessions, responding to enquiries via email, and coordinating with the Organisational Development team to confirm the number of attendees. I input all relevant data into a database, which I then use to create data visualisations that help track training progress and attendance. I also assist the trainer by setting up the training room and handle the registration of certificates after sessions.
My main responsibilities
- Managing and coordinating training bookings
- Responding to training-related enquiries through email
- Communicating with Organisational Development about booking numbers and updates
- Maintaining and updating the training database
- Creating data visualisations from training statistics to support reporting
- Assisting trainers with room setup and logistics
- Registering and tracking certificates for completed training sessions
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the variety in my daily tasks.
I find it rewarding to use data to create insights that help improve training delivery, and I appreciate being part of a process that supports staff development.
The role also gives me a chance to work closely with different teams, which keeps things engaging.
The most challenging aspect of my role
Initially, juggling multiple bookings and enquiries while ensuring all data was accurate and up to date was quite challenging.
Co-ordinating between departments and handling last-minute changes required strong organisational skills and attention to detail. I’ve now picked up a steady routine that works well for me, allowing me to keep everything on track.
