A role that makes a difference

As part of our plans to celebrate Estates and Facilities day, we have asked colleagues from the Division of Infrastructure to share their career stories. Nadeem currently works as a Security Officer, and you can read his story below.
My career journey so far
I started my career at St James’s Hospital in Leeds, where I worked for three years as a linen porter. I also worked weekends as a retail security guard, which sparked my interest in security work.
After this, I joined Mid Yorks as an agency worker and was later offered a permanent position. This allowed me to develop within a role that I'm really interested in.
Motivation for working in the NHS
I was drawn to this line of work so that I could support people during what can often be challenging times in their lives.
Being able to assist patients, visitors, and staff members on a daily basis is incredibly fulfilling and a privilege I value greatly.
Career aspirations and background
This is very much the career path I envisioned for myself. From my time working in retail security, I always wanted to pursue a career in protective services, moving into healthcare security has proven to be very rewarding.
A typical day in my role
My shift typically begins at 6:30am, where I start by patrolling the Accident and Emergency department (A&E) until around 10:00am.
I then continue with general patrols across the hospital grounds, which include monitoring visitor car parks, conducting helipad safety checks, and assisting the team with maintaining security machines and access barriers.
After lunch, I return to the A&E area to support paramedics, manage the drop-off zones, and provide assistance to visitors.
