Meet Lauren - Apprentice HR Advisor

It’s International Human Resources Day on Tuesday 20 May, and to mark the day, we are featuring a case study from Lauren, who works in our Human Resources (HR) Team.
Our HR team makes sure that staff across the Trust are fully supported and able to do their jobs. This covers a wide range of projects and tasks, some of which include managing the recruitment process, overseeing inductions and appraisals, creating employment policies, implementing health and well-being strategies and workforce planning.
What’s your role, and how long have you been with the Trust
Apprentice HR Advisor – I joined at the start of December 2024
Can you briefly describe your career journey with us?
This is my first experience of working in the NHS and my first public sector role. I had passed my CIPD level 3 qualification, and I was looking to progress to my level 5. I have joined MYTT as an apprentice working in the Operational HR Team.
During my apprenticeship I am working to achieve my People Professional qualification along with my CIPD level 5, this should take around 2 years. As part of my apprenticeship 20% of my time at work is allocated to working on my course.
What inspired you to pursue your current line of work?
I have previously worked in retail management roles, I found that I enjoyed the HR aspects of the role. This prompted me to complete my CIPD level 3 which is the Foundation Certificate in People Practice.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I support managers with sickness management and day to day HR queries. I also work with HR colleagues to continuously improve process and input on policy changes. A key project at the moment is supporting managers and staff with flexible working arrangements.
What are the most rewarding and challenging aspects of your job?
Rewarding – supporting both manager and team members with difficult situations when they need it.
Challenging – ensuring you offer the right support. It is important to stay up to date with changes to employment law and any changes to Trust policy and processes.
What advice would you give to someone starting in your role?
Be patient as there is a lot of information to take on board and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
