Stay and Thrive - Shahnel Lief Baring

Every month, we welcome many internationally recruited staff from overseas into the Trust. Shahnel joined the team early in May and is one of many colleagues from all over the world who strengthen our workforce and the service we provide.

My name is Shahnel Lief Baring, and I work as a Radiographer. I am one of the first internationally recruited radiographers to join the Trust.

I started with Mid Yorkshire in May 2023, along with another radiographer. We were collected from Manchester Airport and taken to the accommodation provided to all international recruits, which made us feel safe on our arrival to the UK. The Trust also gave us a welcome pack to support us in our first days, which included essential homewares and food supplies.  As a migrant from the Philippines, I really appreciated this as it complimented my personal choice.

It took me some time to adjust to my new working environment, which was very different from what I was used to back in the Philippines. My decision to work abroad was a huge leap of faith, taken in order to progress in this field of expertise, as there is a lot more to learn here in the UK.

This Trust has a great support system for all international recruits, which I found beneficial to the well-being of someone who came from a different country and is experiencing various cultural diversity. Moreover, they encourage staff to have a balanced work and social life. Mid Yorkshire also promotes equal opportunity for both local and international recruits in career progression.

Even in the early stage of my career with the Trust, I can see how this organisation provides support to both local and international recruits to maximise both personal and professional career growth.

The opportunity to work in the UK and be here at Mid Yorkshire is truly a privilege that I would encourage others to pursue in their careers.

Take a look at the Stay and Thrive section to find out more about  the support offered by the Trust.
