Why a data engineering coach is important!

Jonathan Gee, Deputy Head of Information Services & DW@P Lead talks about the pivotal role being a Data Engineering Coach at our the Trust.

We’re currently advertising for a Data Engineering Coach in our Data Engineering Team, so I thought it might be valuable to write a little bit here about why this role is so important.

I’m proud to say that I’m from a technical background. I studied Applied Computing at University and worked in application & web development before finding my passion for data and analytics in the NHS.

I’ve worked with a number of brilliant, established techies and I’ve been privileged to see people grow and flourish – importantly I’ve seen and admired people who have helped others on their journey. I still remember the friends that helped me early in my career and I think I’ll always feel hugely grateful for them. If you’re reading this - you know who you are and you rock!

I’m sure that if you work or have worked in a Data Engineering, Software or Web Development Team you’ll have fond memories of the people that have helped you along the way. I’m sure there are parallels in other fields too. Either way this group of people are hugely beneficial to those around them, the teams they work in and their team’s customers and stakeholders

Those of us that know how awesome these individuals are, know all too well that these people don’t usually have a job description or title that does them justice – making them even more heroic in our minds!

At the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, we want to put all of this right and we’re recruiting for a Data Engineering Coach who will have the opportunity to do all of the above AND be recognised for the value that they bring!

Our Data Engineering Coach will be focussed on lifting our Data Engineers up, from apprentice level and beyond, helping to propel their careers and our data platform & services into the future.
