Virtual Ward care brings comfort and confidence for 91-year-old patient
In January, 91-year-old June from Altofts became a patient of the Trust’s Virtual Wards service. Anxious about the prospect of being admitted to hospital, June was instead supported safely and effectively in her own home, an experience her family has described as “perfect”.
Over several weeks, June received care from the Virtual Hospital team, with regular home visits and telephone support after being referred to the service by her GP to treat her chest infection.
Despite the winter pressures facing NHS services, June told the team that her care exceeded all expectations, with every interaction marked by kindness, patience and attentiveness.
June’s daughter, Alyson, praised the nurses for never appearing rushed and for always taking the time to listen carefully to her mum’s needs, helping June feel fully involved in her care and confident in her treatment plan.
Alyson said:
The nurses explained everything thoroughly. Mum felt safe, listened to and cared for at every step.
In addition to home visits, June also received reassuring follow-up phone calls from the Virtual Ward team, including access to a direct line should she have any concerns, ensuring support was always close at hand.
Receiving care at home brought clear clinical and personal benefits. By avoiding unnecessary hospital admission, June faced a reduced risk of further infection, helped ease pressure on hospital beds, and was able to remain mobile and active in the comfort and safety of her own home. The result was not only a happier patient, but a better outcome.
For June and her family, the Virtual Ward model proved a success in every respect.
Alyson added:
We hear so often that the NHS is broken, but this experience shows just how incredible NHS staff are, even under immense pressure.
She also praised not only the frontline teams, but the many staff working behind the scenes to make the Virtual Ward service possible.
There simply aren’t enough words to thank the entire team. Their care, kindness and dedication made all the difference.
