Mid Yorkshire's vaccination centre marks 150,000 milestone

West Yorkshire’s first large-scale COVID-19 vaccination centre is celebrating reaching a major milestone: its 150,000th COVID-19 vaccine.

The vaccination centre, which opened in January, is located in the corporate headquarters of Spectrum Community Health on Navigation Walk, Wakefield. The centre has been instrumental in the vaccine rollout, with staff from The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust vaccinating hundreds of patients per day in the fight against COVID-19.

On 12 December, Helen Westerman received her booster vaccine and became the 150,000th patient to be vaccinated at the site.

Mrs Westerman said, “I would encourage everybody to get all three of their jabs to provide the maximum amount of protection from COVID-19.

“You might experience a small amount of aching in your arm but other than that it is pain-free, and I had a really good experience with the staff at Navigation Walk.

"I’d also recommend the younger generation to get their vaccines too. I’m 50 years old and it is important for me – but it’s equally as important for younger people to ensure they are protecting themselves and their loved ones this winter.”

Dr Linda Harris, Chief Executive of Spectrum Community Health, said “To reach such a milestone in less than 12 months is an amazing achievement.

“The community vaccination centre is a fantastic example of the strength of partnership working in Wakefield and it shows that when we work together, we can make a real difference in our local communities.

“We’re thankful for all our patients who have come forward for vaccination and to the amazing team of healthcare staff, volunteers and stewards who are helping to keep the centre running around the clock.”

David Melia, Director of Nursing and Quality at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, added, “Reaching 150,000 vaccine doses is a fantastic achievement and I’d like to thank everyone involved for their hard work and dedication in their contribution towards the delivery of the Community Vaccination Centre.

“We’d like to remind local people that the offer of the vaccine is still there for those who haven’t yet had it, so please do come and see us to get your jab as it is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from COVID-19 and new variants.”
