Trust statement - 21 November
Brent Kilmurray, Chief Executive at the Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust said:
Sadly, on Tuesday evening, we can confirm that a patient receiving care at Pinderfields Hospital fell from a height in the main atrium. This was a distressing incident and our thoughts are with the patient and their loved ones.
I want to express my sincere thanks to our colleagues for their quick, professional and compassionate response. As well as dealing with the incident itself, they provided support to patients and visitors who were present, as well as to one another.
We acknowledge that this is not the first incident of this nature in the Pinderfields atrium. After previous incidents, we commissioned independent risk assessments of our buildings and acted on recommendations to ensure we mitigated the risks. In taking these actions, we have also had to make sure we did not make changes that compromise other legal obligations, e.g. around air circulation and fire safety.
We have nevertheless begun to review all environmental risk assessments and will look at what further actions may be necessary, as well as working closely with West Yorkshire Police who are currently investigating the incident.
