About our service

Yorkshire Regional Spinal Injuries Centre (YRSIC) based in Pinderfields General Hospital  providing in-patient care for those with a spinal cord injury.

The centre covers patients from West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and Hull/Humberside and has 32 beds. This is in line with the service specifications agreed by NHS-E/I and includes traumatic and non-traumatic non-progressive spinal cord disease for acute input and continuing with providing life-long support following discharge via an established outpatient and outreach service.

YRSIC is staffed with two substantive consultants offering acute and ongoing care of individual with spinal cord injury. Between them share areas of special interests in pressure sore management, spasticity management, early urological care and appropriate rehabilitation interventions in deformity prevention and correction. There is also a special interest in restorative techniques with the use of but not limited to functional electrical stimulation. We also are a regional centre for spasticity management in other neurological conditions offering intrathecal drug delivery device implantations.

The day to day running and planning of the ward is well co-ordinated by the Ward manager. They are ably supported by a dedicated and effective working team consists of nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, outreach and liaison team. We also have an education facilitator who suffered a spinal cord injury that supports a series of patient education sessions that will help you understand your spinal cord injury and give you the skills and techniques to help you stay well and healthy following discharge.

The state-of-the-art purpose-built unit has dedicated rehabilitation facilities including a fully equipped gymnasium, hydrotherapy pool, conditioning suite and occupational therapy rooms. The specialist multidisciplinary team has considerable experience in understanding the effects of spinal cord injury and aim to optimise physical and psychological ability to achieve independence appropriate to the level of disability. We work together to offer a goal-orientated programme of care and education.
