Building a career in facilities

Cara, team leader, wearing a white blouse, pictured smiling at the camera against a plain background

Cara is a Domestic Services Team Leader at Dewsbury and District Hospital, she shares her journey with us so far below.

What does your role involve?

I manage a team of supervisors who provide a cleaning service for patients and visitors.

What’s the best thing about your role?

The best thing about the role is the satisfaction I get from providing the service and the great team spirit we have. It’s also lovely when we hear compliments from patients about members of our team.

How did you get into your role

I started out as a domestic assistant at another Trust around 9 years ago, before joining Mid Yorkshire in a supervisor role. I built up skills in various departments like housekeeping, portering and linen services.

I then completed a Level 3 Leadership and Management Apprenticeship, which also enabled me to take my Level 2 maths and English. This, in turn, helped me move into a team leader role.

I’m now studying towards a Level 5 Leadership and Management qualification, which I hope will support me in any future positions I go for.
