Inspiring futures at our onsite careers event
On Thursday 23 April, we held a careers event at Pinderfields Hospital.
This was the first event of its kind across the Trust, and it was fantastic to see such a wide range of teams and career pathways represented in one place. We invited school pupils in years 8 to 11 to attend from schools across Wakefield and Kirklees.
The enthusiasm shown by colleagues on their stalls was evident throughout the evening. There was a strong focus on engagement, with plenty of interactive elements for attendees to try, including quizzes, spirometry testing, plaster cast demonstrations, CPR practice, robotic cleaning devices, ultrasound scanning and much more.

Having an ambulance on site was an added bonus, with colleagues from Yorkshire Ambulance Service also attending to showcase the diverse careers available within their organisation.
Around 120 students attended the event, supported by their parents, carers and siblings, which meant there was a real buzz and lots of conversation throughout the night.
Some students arrived with a clear career pathway in mind, but many left having reconsidered their options after speaking to staff and hearing first-hand about the range of opportunities available to them.
We received some lovely feedback from the parents and students, with one parent commenting:
"My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed this event. We met some fabulous, passionate people and learned a lot about areas of the NHS that we didn’t already know about. It has given my daughter lots of ‘food for thought,’ and we sincerely hope that this will become an annual event so that she can keep coming back the further along her education she gets.
At the moment all she knows is that she would like a career in medicine, but after last night now has an interest in cardiology. She’s only year 8 so has plenty of time, but has already said she’s looking forward to finding out more about the NHS!"
