Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust becomes an official Duke of Edinburgh Approved Activity Provider

Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust is pleased to announce that it has been accredited as a Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Approved Activity Provider (AAP) for volunteering. This recognition enables young people completing their DofE Award to undertake their required volunteering within the Trust, creating new pathways for motivated volunteers to support NHS services and patient experience at hospitals in Wakefield, Dewsbury and Pontefract.

Achieving AAP status is an exciting achievement for the Trust, showcasing high-quality, safe and structured volunteering opportunities which make a positive impact on patients, visitors, and the volunteers themselves.

Danielle Norman, Head of Voluntary Services at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, said:

“Becoming a DofE Approved Activity Provider reflects our commitment to opening doors for local young people and nurturing future talent for the NHS. DofE participants bring enthusiasm, dedication and fresh perspectives that make a real difference to patient experience and to our teams.

“We’re excited to welcome more volunteers into our hospitals and to support them in developing skills and confidence that will serve them throughout their careers.”

Aditya Krishnan, who volunteered at Pinderfields Hospital between the ages of 16 to 18, added:

“Volunteering not only developed my abilities but also boosted my mental wellbeing. The satisfaction of helping others is truly rewarding.

“Initially I worked as a hospital guide and later, I assisted on the neurology ward where I supported both patients and their families.

“It was these experiences that inspired me to pursue a career in medicine. I’m now in my second year at Lancaster University and am excited for what lies ahead!”

The Trust welcomes DofE participants aged 18 to 26 to apply throughout the year for a variety of volunteer roles, as well as any adults who would like to volunteer but are not taking part in the Award. For those under 18, opportunities are currently offered through the annual Year 12 volunteering cohort, which ensures the right level of supervision and support.

Prospective volunteers, DofE participants, schools and DofE leaders are invited to find out more about volunteering at the Trust and hear from its volunteers by visiting www.midyorks.nhs.uk/volunteering. Queries can also be sent to the MY Volunteers team at midyorks.volunteer@nhs.net.
