New ‘Mathew Nutter room’ enhances patient care and and research thanks to fundraising by family and friends

A dedicated fundraising campaign in memory of Mathew Nutter has helped transform a clinical research observation and recovery room at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, providing a more comfortable, supportive environment for patients taking part in vital clinical research studies.

Since Mathew passed away from a rare blood cancer in 2022, his friends, family and supporters have raised more than £45,000 for MY Hospitals Charity. Around £23,000 has been contributed towards the refurbishment of a research observation room including new furniture, fittings and patient amenities. Fundraising activities held in Mathew’s memory have included football and cricket tournaments, race nights and community events.

The new Mathew Nutter room plays a critical role in ensuring patient safety and compliance with clinical trial protocols, helping minimise the risk of post-visit complications while enabling the Trust to continue delivering high-quality, innovative research. This will also support the Trust in its ambitions to achieve University Hospital status, which will further enhance patient care and research.

The upgraded space offers a calm, comfortable environment, with electric recliner chairs, multichannel TV and access to refreshments, helping patients relax during post-treatment monitoring. The room also supports research rehabilitation programmes such as PERFORM, which includes supervised exercise and wellbeing sessions over an eight-week period.

Keith Ramsay, Trust Chair and Chair of MY Hospitals Charity, said:

What Mathew’s family and friends have achieved is truly remarkable. Their fundraising has been an extraordinary act of compassionate care, and it has directly helped us create a dedicated recovery space for patients taking part in clinical trials.

This room will make a real, practical difference every single day - helping patients recover safely, supporting our staff, and enabling the Trust to take part in even more vital research.

Incredible fundraising like this demonstrates that together we can make a difference and help our hospitals and community services do more.

On behalf of all our colleagues across the Trust and our MY Hospitals Charity team, I want to say a heartfelt thank you. Mathew’s memory and legacy will continue to create opportunity, hope and progress for patients and families for many years to come.

Joanne Nutter, Mathew’s mum, said:

Following the passing of our son Mathew in 2022 and in recognition for the outstanding care and dedication that he received whilst in hospital, we - Mathew’s family and friends - decided that we would raise funds to support research into future treatments.

This we believed to be a fitting tribute to Mathew, and through various fundraising activities and continued community spirit, we have been able to fund the refurbishment of a research and recovery room dedicated to enhancing patient care in Mathew’s name.

Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust and MY Hospitals Charity would like to thank everyone who supported the fundraising campaign and contributed to creating a space that reflects compassion, care and community spirit.
