Nurse Consultant Leanne becomes an ‘Associate Professor’

Leanne Atkin, a vascular nurse consultant at the Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, has become an Associate Professor at the University of Huddersfield.

Leanne’s role is now a joint clinical and academic position, that combines direct patient care with leading research, teaching, and service development.

In this position she will work to improve outcomes for patients with vascular disease and leg ulceration, while also shaping the next generation of nurses and contributing to national wound care policy and strategy.

Leanne said: “I feel incredibly privileged to hold a role that blends patient care with research and education. By bringing clinical practice and academia together, we can make real changes that improve outcomes for patients and inspire the next generation of nurses.”

She started this new role in April, but for many years prior to this she had been working between academia and the NHS developing her academic research portfolio.

Her time is split between the University of Huddersfield and the Trust, enabling her to bridge academic and clinical practice directly.

For the Trust, Leanne’s new role ensures the latest evidence and research are translated into practice, improving patient outcomes and service delivery.

The university benefits from strengthened clinical academic pathways, enhanced teaching with real-world clinical expertise, and builds research capacity in vascular and wound care.

Together, this partnership brings innovation, visibility, and impact at both local and national levels.
