Saving lives through organ donation
Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust has helped transform the lives of 32 people through organ and tissue donation over the past year, with 20 patients receiving life-saving organ transplants and 12 corneas donated to help restore sight.
Latest figures from NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) for 2025/26 shows the Trust facilitated seven organ donations from consented donors, resulting in 20 transplants for patients in need across the UK.
The Trust also enabled the donation of 12 corneas, which were received by NHSBT Eye Banks to support people living with sight loss.
The report highlights the Trust's outstanding performance in supporting organ donation, being rated as exceptional when compared with national data for referring potential organ donors, and ensuring the presence of a Specialist Nurse during family discussions about organ donation, providing families with expert support and information.
During the last year, the Trust has also referred over 100 patients to NHSBT's Organ Donation Services Team, achieving a 100% referral rate.
Talib Yaseen, Chief Nursing Officer at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, said:
“Every donor and their family has made a remarkable difference, helping to save and transform lives.
“These results also reflect the dedication of our clinical teams, who work closely with NHSBT to ensure every opportunity for donation is recognised and managed with care and compassion. A huge well done to everyone involved.”
Regional figures show that in the North East and Yorkshire, 44% of people have registered an opt-in decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register, slightly above the national average of 43%.
While organ donation continues to make a life-changing difference, demand for transplants remains high. Anyone wishing to find out more about organ donation or record their decision can visit the NHS Organ Donation Register: https://bit.ly/OD-register-2025
