Wonderland performance brings joy to elderly patients at Dewsbury and District Hospital
People receiving care on the elderly wards at Dewsbury and District Hospital were treated to a wonderland performance from Spiltmilk Dance last week.
Patients were delighted to sing, dance and play along with performers during the show; an activity that was also praised by staff and family members on the day. One patient said it was "just what you need at Christmas", with another adding that performers “should come every day".
This magical show was produced in collaboration with care home residents and staff to make sure it is highly engaging and inclusive for an older audience and those living with dementia.
Wonderland sees three performers surprise, intrigue and delight, blending live music, dance, audience interactions and extravagant costumes to conjure up some festive fun.
A son visiting his mother was moved by the impact this had, sharing "My mother hasn't left the house or her room for nearly three years for any sort of entertainment due to her condition, but she came to the performance and loved every second of it."
Justin Trewren, Matron for the Division of Medicine at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, said:
“The healing power of music and theatre should never be underestimated; the patient interactions and smiles were wonderful!
“Thank you to MY Hospitals Charity for supporting such an impactful event and continuing to help us enhance patient experience.”
The events were funded through the MY Hospitals Charity Arts for Health Fund, which supports the powerful role that arts and creativity play in enhancing health and wellbeing.
Keith Ramsay, Chair of MY Hospitals Charity and Mid Yorkshire NHS Teaching Trust, added:
“We are thrilled to see the joy and connection that this performance brought to patients and their families. Moments like these remind us why arts and creativity are so vital in healthcare - they lift spirits, reduce isolation, create shared experiences, and can even boost recovery times.
“As a charity we are proud to fund initiatives like Wonderland through our Arts for Health Fund, and we thank everyone whose generosity makes this possible. Your support helps us continue to bring comfort and happiness to those in our care.”
