Working together to support children and families living with epilepsy
A new engagement workshop is helping Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust shape the future of care for children and young people living with epilepsy.
The event, is in partnership with Hodgkinson McCambridge, brought together young people, parents and carers to share their lived experiences of paediatric epilepsy services. The insights gathered will now be used to support a business case for new staff recruitment, aimed at improving the care and support available to local families.
This work is part of a wider collaboration through the Health Innovation Partnership – supported by Shared Prosperity Fund grant funding and delivered in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Huddersfield University, and the Trust’s Innovation Team.
Importantly, the workshop is hosted at a Wakefield Family Hub, who kindly offered the space free of charge – a strong example of community partnership in action.
“This has been a brilliant opportunity to work differently, bringing patients, services and local businesses together to inform future care,” said Sarah Odabashy, Innovation Manager. “We’re grateful to everyone who shared their stories so openly.”
Carly Blackburn, children’s epilepsy nurse specialist who supported the facilitation of the workshop, added: “This kind of honest feedback is vital. It helps us understand what matters most to families – and where we can do more.”
The team hopes to continue building on the learning from this event, with a view to shaping Epilepsy services that are more responsive, joined-up and centred around the needs of child patients and their families.
