Starting a journey in health and care

Paige wearing a pale blue clinical support worker uniform, against a pink background

Paige is an Apprentice Clinical Support Worker.

She has worked for the Trust for more than seven months and has already made a fantastic start, earning a nomination for Healthcare Apprentice of the Year at the Heart of Yorkshire Apprenticeship Awards.

She received a glowing nomination from her assessor, who praised everything she has achieved at such a young age. She stood out for her confidence, kindness and resilience, and was also recognised for producing excellent work while balancing her studies and role with remarkable maturity.

Here she shares little bit about her role.

What do you like most about your apprenticeship

The thing I like the most about my apprenticeship is being able to learn whilst also doing the job and learning millions of new things every day.

Have there been any challenges

There have been many challenges such as patients on end of life and supporting their family as well as them. Also supporting patients with dementia or those who may be aggressive, it's important to help them to understand what is happening while also being there to support and reassure them.

What’s the best thing about your role

The best thing about my role is supporting and encouraging every single patient I look after.

How does your role support patient care

My role supports patient care by helping patients get up each day, have a wash, and get dressed ready for the day. I also support patient care by assisting patients to the bathroom or helping them stretch their legs. I also provide emotional support by being there to offer comfort and show them that they can trust me.

Do you have any longer-term career plans

I would love to move into nursing after a few years in healthcare, and then hopefully become a midwife in the end.
