Advanced 3D imaging and ultrasound technology helps Wakefield patient keep his kidney | News

A Wakefield man has praised the surgical team at Pinderfields Hospital after benefiting from an advanced robotic procedure that removed a complex kidney tumour while preserving his kidney.

Surgeons at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust successfully removed a cancerous tumour from the right kidney of Mark Gisby, 64, a former driving instructor from Wakefield, using a combination of the Da Vinci robotic surgical system, Arietta intra-operative ultrasound and Innersight 3D reconstruction technology.

This innovative technology has been used in recent years by the Trust’s kidney surgeons, Mr Mohammed Aldiwani and Mr Grigorios Kyriazis, and allows surgeons to create a detailed 3D map of the tumour before surgery. This helps plan and safely perform some of the most complex kidney-sparing operations, that may otherwise have required removal of the entire kidney.

Mark made an excellent recovery with no complications and was discharged home less than 48 hours after surgery. Tests later confirmed the tumour had been completely removed.

More than a month on from the operation, Mark has thanked the team who cared for him.

Mark said: "It is now just over one month since I had my surgery, I feel pretty strong and I am recovering well. I think if I hadn't had this type of surgery then I wouldn't be where I am today. I would like to thank Mr Aldiwani and his surgical team for what they have done for me. I can't thank them enough."

Mr Mohammed Aldiwani, Consultant Urological Surgeon, said: "This case demonstrates how advanced technology is transforming the care we can offer our patients. By combining robotic surgery with 3D reconstruction and intra-operative ultrasound, we're able to tackle increasingly complex kidney tumours while preserving kidney function whenever it is safe to do so."
