How midwifery became my calling

Maisie is currently a specialist midwife who helps inspire, recruit and support future midwives.
We asked her a few questions on her journey with us so far.
What made you decide on a career as a midwife?
I decided to become a midwife in secondary school following a careers day, which sparked my interest in healthcare. I then supported a close family friend through a difficult postnatal period and found that midwifery was my calling.
What does your current role involve?
I trained 2017-2020 and started my first job as a band five in January 2021. I am now a band 7 specialist midwife - involved with recruiting graduate midwives and supporting students and early career midwives.
What are the best bits / challenges?
Best bits - seeing the same people I supported as students start their dream career and achieve band six and seeing how happy they are! Challenges - when I have competing demands and it's hard to make everyone happy, but they are all so grateful so this offsets it a bit.
What are your careers plans?
I am currently working my way through the Management and Leadership in Healthcare and would love to be a matron in the future. But for now I am focusing on developing my own skills and confidence in a management role, and enjoying every challenge that comes my way.
Do you have any tips for others?
My top tips are always just go for it, take any opportunity that comes your way and ALWAYS reach out for help and support.
